Research in recent years has led to the understanding that most pathological processes in a living organism are associated with disorders of the prooxidant-antioxidant status. Oxidative processes accompanied by the formation of toxic organic and inorganic peroxide compounds are an integral part of the functioning of a living organism, as well as antioxidant mechanisms that carry out their inactivation. When the balance of these components is disturbed against the background of severe pathological conditions, excessive accumulation of free radicals and products of their reactions occurs, which leads to biochemical and structural disorders of cells: changes in cell membrane permeability, disruption of intercellular interaction, metabolic processes. Metabolic disorders arising at the cellular level determine the development of functional insufficiency of various organs and tissues, disruption of adaptive resources, and lead to the occurrence of oxidative stress.
The main goal of this work was to study the processes of lipid peroxidation and the state of the antioxidant defense system in highly productive dairy cows in certain physiological periods, as well as in ketosis and obstetric pathology.
Our research has established that calving is a physiological stress for cows and the early postpartum period in them is characterized by a slight activation of lipid peroxidation processes. In cows with postpartum pathology, the processes of oxidative damage to lipids increase and correlate with the severity and duration of the disease, and the functional state of the antioxidant system decreases.
