Abstract

This study examined the influence of somatotropin cascade gene polymorphisms (PRL, PIT1, GH) on the variability and correlations of milk productivity parameters in Jersey cows (n=87). For each gene, the analysis of the coefficients of variation (Cv) for milk yield, mass fraction of fat, milk fat, mass fraction of protein and milk protein was carried out, and the correlations (r) between these traits were assessed. It was established that PRL gene has the most pronounced effect on phenotypic variability: animals with PRL BB genotype are characterized by the maximum variation coefficients for all traits, and for mass fraction of protein (23.21±6.70%) and milk protein (41.05±11.85%), the differences with other genotypes are statistically significant (p<0.05). The influence of PIT1 and GH genes is less pronounced, however, in PIT1 AB heterozygotes, increased variability of milk protein (23.02±3.26%) was noted, and in GH LL homozygotes, high variability in milk yield and mass fraction of protein. Correlation analysis revealed that cows with PRL BB genotype exhibited a positive correlation between milk yield and mass fraction of fat (r=0.56; p<0.05), as well as a positive (albeit non-significant) correlation between milk yield and mass fraction of protein, which is favorable for selection. The PIT1 AB genotype demonstrated the highest correlation between milk yield and milk fat (r=0.82; p<0.001) and no negative correlation with mass fraction of protein. The GH VV genotype demonstrated the highest correlation between milk yield and milk protein (r=0.85; p<0.001) and a weak negative correlation with mass fraction of protein. Thus, PRL BB and GH VV genotypes are the most promising for selection for simultaneous improvement of quantitative and qualitative milk parameters, and heterozygous PIT1 AB genotype can serve as a marker for maintaining genetic plasticity of the population.
